In this meeting, we heard from the City of Barrie and the City of Burlington’s experience with net zero effort. We also had Lauralei Heggie from HRAI, speaking about their training opportunities and Kathryn Wilson from MMC, who presented their Net Zero Ice Rink challenge.
Some of the main takeaways from Barrie and Burlington’s experience with the Net Zero effort are:
- The pathway to net zero is conservation, electrifying, deploying renewables and planning to deploy all the infrastructure in a life cycle of the capital renewal.
- Incorporating net zero considerations into Asset Management and Capital Planning is crucial because when a net zero solution is introduced during an infrastructure renewal, the incremental cost, if there is one, to go to net zero can be seen/understood.
- Building portfolio analysis (audits) should identify decarbonization.
- Capital Plan Review is needed to identify upcoming equipment replacement and cost, as well as modelling analysis to capture growth plans/ master plans.
- Renewable Energy Analysis of all buildings and mapping locations and the potential cost is essential in planning for net zero.
