Buildings are the top greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters by sector, but they also provide a greater opportunity for municipalities to reduce their emissions. Benchmarking allows for the identification of opportunities for change to improve the efficiency or effectiveness of municipal services. Additionally, tracking the building’s energy saves money. Broader Public Sector (BPS) buildings in Ontario, which include municipally owned buildings, schools, hospitals and more, are required to report energy use and GHG emissions annually.
In this webinar, Kyle Mennie, from Windfall Centre, presented their BPS Building Comparison Map and how it can be used to benchmark BPS buildings across municipalities. Afterwards, Nayel Halim from Durham Region and Harry French from Windfall Centre provided an overview of the soon-to-launch Durham Greener Buildings program, targeting to benchmark over 1000 commercial and institutional buildings over the next three years.
