Green roofs manage rainfall on site, purifies the air, reduces ambient temperature, regulates indoor temperature, saves energy and encourages biodiversity in our communities. Moreover, people are happier in a green environment than in grey surroundings. Christian Mahlstedt from Ginkgo Sustainability provided a webinar to answer green roof and living wall questions, highlight the enabling conditions for green roofs and how municipalities can better support the advancement of green roofs in their facilities and across their community. Green Roof authorities were added to the 2017 update of the Municipal Act (there is a requirement for a technical standard identified in the Municipal Act, however there is the City of Toronto technical standard (linked below) that has been is use for over a decade. If your municipality is advancing green roof discussions, please do let us know. We are creating a cohort of municipalities working on advancing green roofs in the coming months.
